A practical itinerary built around the Lisbon locals actually visit — the viewpoints, the food, the neighbourhoods, and the things most guides leave out.
Three days is enough to see Lisbon properly, provided you resist the urge to see everything. The city is compact, walkable in parts, and well-served by the metro — but it also has enough to fill two weeks. The key is to choose a few things and give them real time rather than rushing between sites.
Day one: stay in the east. Walk from Penha de França down through Graça to Alfama in the morning, when the streets are quiet and the light is still low. The Castelo de São Jorge is worth an hour. Lunch somewhere in Alfama — not the places with menus in ten languages, but the ones with handwritten boards and plastic chairs. In the afternoon, take Tram 28 west to Chiado and walk through Bairro Alto before the evening crowd arrives.
Day two: go west. Belém is a half-day trip by tram or Uber. The Torre de Belém and the Jerónimos Monastery are the main stops — both worth it, go early before the coach groups arrive. Eat a pastel de nata at the original Pastéis de Belém on Rua de Belém. In the afternoon, cross back east and spend the evening at LX Factory — a converted industrial space with good food, independent shops, and a Sunday market if you happen to be there on the right day.
Day three: slow down. Take a morning walk to one of the miradouros you haven't visited yet. Spend time at the Mercado da Ribeira if you want a good overview of Portuguese food in one place. In the afternoon, get on the metro and explore a neighbourhood you haven't reached yet — Intendente, Mouraria, or the area around Anjos all reward a few hours of wandering.
A few things worth knowing: the metro is fast and clean — a 24-hour pass costs very little and covers all the central zones. Ubers are cheap and reliable if you're tired. Most restaurants open for lunch at noon and dinner from 7pm — earlier than you think, and busier than you expect by 8pm. Book dinner in advance for anywhere you care about.
